1 - UNDERSTAND
Start by understanding what is happening.
Before we can change something, we need to understand it.
Emotions, behaviour and relationships rarely exist in isolation. What we see on the surface can be influenced by experience, expectations, environment, relationships, stress, beliefs, needs and the way a person has learned to make sense of the world.
Understanding doesn't mean excusing behaviour or removing responsibility.
It means becoming curious enough to see the bigger picture.
We explore:
What is happening?
What are we noticing?
What might be influencing it?
What sits beneath the immediate response?
What matters here?
What needs, values or priorities are involved?
What else needs to be understood?
What might we be missing?
Understanding is not the absence of accountability. It is the beginning of informed choice.
2 - CONNECT
Connection changes what becomes possible.
People are more able to learn, reflect and engage when they feel seen, respected and understood.

Connection isn't about agreeing with someone or avoiding difficult conversations. It is about creating enough relational safety for honest communication, curiosity and collaboration to occur.

In practice, that means paying attention to the relationship as well as the task.
Connection can involve:
-
listening before responding
-
communicating with clarity
-
recognising the person behind the behaviour
-
creating psychological and relational safety
-
understanding different perspectives
-
maintaining boundaries while preserving dignity
Connection doesn't remove boundaries. It helps us hold them differently.
3 - REGULATE
Regulation creates room for choice.
When people are overwhelmed, stressed, threatened or emotionally activated, their capacity to think, communicate and respond intentionally can change.

Regulation is not about making difficult emotions disappear.

It is about developing the awareness and skills to recognise what is happening and create enough stability to respond rather than simply react.
NOTICE
Recognise activation.
PAUSE
Create space.
GROUND
Reconnect with what is happening now.
RESPOND
Choose what comes next.
Regulation looks different for different people. The goal isn't to prescribe one right response. It is to build a broader repertoire of responses.
4 - CHOOSE
From reaction to intentional response.
Understanding and regulation create something powerful: choice.
Choice doesn't mean every option is available. It doesn't mean circumstances are always within our control.
It means recognising where there is room to influence what happens next.
What do I want to communicate?
What response fits my values?
What boundary needs to be held?
What action is possible now?
We help people move from:

“This is just how I am.”
to
“I understand why I respond this way — and I can explore what happens next.”
5 - GROW
Capability is built through reflection and practice.
Growth isn't about becoming a different person.

It is about becoming more capable of being yourself — with greater awareness, choice and skill.
Sustainable change comes from applying learning, reflecting on what happens and practising new responses over time.
Learn
Understand something new.
Practice
Try it in real situations.

Reflect
Notice what happened.
Adapt
Make adjustments.
Build
Turn learning into capability.
Insight matters. Application is where capability grows.
